Philebrity Says’ “Build-Yr-Own-Doll Project Runway Possibly More Fun And Interesting Than Being On Project Runway

Build-Yr-Own-Doll Project Runway Possibly More Fun And Interesting Than Being On Project Runway

Oh, Project Runway. You’ve got everyone worried, Tim Gunn is having panic attacks, and after this season, you’ll be on Lifetime. And not even in that order. WTF? Could it be that this season could be your last before you fall off? If it is, our pals at National Mechanics in Old City are going out with a bang, or at least, lots of drunk people showing each other Barbie pelvises. At 11pm on this and the upcoming Wednesdays, they’ll be hosting a game night called “The Runway Project” where they’ll screen Project Runway and those participating will dress up dolls in accord with the theme of that evening. At the close of the event, there will be a contest judged by the participants of the best dolls. The winner(s) will get a prize. We’re not sure what the price is, but it’ll probably be either, uh, fierce and/or tranny-approved.

After entering National Mechanics last Wednesday, I knew the task at hand wouldn’t be simple. A large group of Runway Project vets had already assembled, and my dear friend and fellow fashionista Amber and I were new to the game. Either we’d be quickly out-designed, or we’d pull out some serious arts and crafts skills to wow this crowd. By the night’s end, the latter proved to be true … well, kind of.

Runway Project is National Mechanics’ screening party for the fifth season of Bravo’s fierce reality TV show. Getting into the game is easy: Name your team (the more ProjRun-related the better) and name your “model,” a hysterically disproportionate knockoff Barbie that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “hot tranny mess.” When hostess Franny Klum gives the OK, teams make a mad dash for the fabric table and grab the best materials they can find. While all of us Runway Project participants designed (and drank) away, the real Project Runway contestants created duds and drama behind us on a large drop-down screen. (And yes, Tim Gunn is even more beautiful in hi-def.)

The evening’s challenge — a day-to-evening look for Brooke Shields’ character on Lipstick Jungle — left plenty of room for interpretation. My team, Team Wunderbar, designed a chic, teal cheetah sheath and capelet ensemble, while others made multilayer tear-off skirts, elaborate feather trains and sparkling, oversize totes.

When the show reached the runway, the entire bar watched, judged and waited. After a fond farewell to Kelli and a victory for Keith, it was our turn. The models were stuffed on a foamcore stage, and each team had a chance to explain and defend their designs while everyone willing to vote cast their ballots. Team Wunderbar didn’t win the challenge or the $50 restaurant gift certificate, but we did score an honorable mention and a free game next week. So until then, auf Wiedersehen, bitches.

With Voices From Philly to Jamaica

TRAVERSE ARTS PROJECT PREMIERE’S TECH.LOGIC THE PARANOIA OF OPPORTUNITY IN THE 2008 PHILLY FRINGE FESTIVAL

PHILADELPHIA – With voices from Philly to Jamaica, Traverse Arts Project’s debut interdisciplinary piece, Tech.Logic: The Paranoia of Opportunity, opens with a multiracial cast at The Play ground at The Adrienne Theater on August 29, 2008 at 6:30 p.m  and runs 45 minutes. Tickets are priced at $15.00 and are available through the Philadelphia Fringe website at www.pafringe.com. The Play ground at The Adrienne Theatre is located at 2030 Sansom Street in Center City Philadelphia.

The movement, text and narrative of the piece were created from submitted responses and cast exploration of difficult, personal and probing questions about technology’s contribution to society. This collage of individual viewpoints allows TAP to explore the notion of being connected and technology’s ability to alter the values of time, people and preference. Tech.Logic  aims to hold up a societal mirror to shed light on our integrated  techno dependence.

The opening monologue  from one Philadelphian’s obsession with being “plugged in” quickly gives way to diverse segments including  Lisa’s Story as she recounts her tale of discovering love and sexuality via the Internet in the shadow of Jamaica’s  rampant homophobia.

The segment “TEXT:” explores breaking up, hooking up, and maintaining friendships with people via text messaging and leaves one submitter feeling his actions were self-deprecating.  We see how a text message is easily misinterpreted based on the mental, emotional, and physical constructs that make up the world of the receiver.

In “Paranoia of Opportunity:” we delve into the world of unlimited choice and singularity, a futuristic moment in time when knowledge doubles in an instant leaving the human race utterly helpless. In the age of unlimited choice and I-living, is technology further breaking down the tribe or creating a new, global-centered one?

Director Mark A. Dahl and Choreographer /Assistant Director Gina Stickney explained,  “We seek out like-minded performers who are fully committed to learning about themselves and others through the art. Commitment, open-mindedness and compassion are traits we looked for in artists.  The movement pieces are created from improvisation with performers using text, imagery, music and intuition as inspiration revealing  our various dependencies and relationships with technology.” Tech.Logic promises to spark conversation among the audience  long after they leave the theater.
